Mary. E. Burkett, author of ‘The Art of the Felt Maker’ is known in the art world, as ‘The International Mother of felt’. Her interest in one of Man’s earliest materials, started in 1962, when she realised that Felt had not received much scholarly attention. After much travelling and research, she curated the first art show in Britain, dedicated entirely to felt. This is a rare book which we bought directly from the author. It holds many pictures, and detailed accounts of how nomads and communities make felt for wearing and living in. It explains the language of pattern in felt, and how the styles differ around the world. A must for any textile lover, it is packed full of information, and inspiration.
